Raising Lazarus tells the true story of Kat Francois’s relative, Private Lazarus from Granada, who joined the British West Indian Regiment in 1915 to fight in the First World War for the country he only knew as ‘the Motherland’.
Charting this young soldier’s journey from the Caribbean, first to the Sussex Coast (Seaford, where 19 of the West Indian volunteers are buried having died of pneumonia) then on to Egypt and East Africa, Francois shines a light on the thousands of West Indian soldiers who volunteered for King and Empire. It is an informative, moving and, at times, humorous performance.
Raising Lazarus is written and performed by Kat Francois, who is a regular performer on BBC radio and London’s poetry scene.
There will be a post-performance discussion, and an epilogue: ‘Windrush Postscript’ by Lewes poet John Agard.
