Graham Mayhew: Lewesians and the Great War

Graham’s involvement in writing a definitive book on Lewes’s Great War dead came from an approach made to him in April 2014 by the then Town Clerk, Steve Brigden, to provide an update to the names on Lewes War Memorial, following an enquiry from Lewes British Legion. Little did either know that it would be nine years later that the results of the work would eventually be published.

In this talk, Graham aims to give some insights into the enormous range of material that is available these days for anyone who is researching a community, or individuals, during the Great War; how one might start to go about it, and what sorts of things one could expect to find.

The talk will be illustrated with examples of some of the main sources he actually used, and should be of particular interest to anyone thinking about finding out more about their own ancestors or about the history of our town, or indeed any other town or village in England during the early 20th century.

The result of nearly 9 years’ work, Lewesians and the Great War comprises 544 pages, 390 individual biographies, an historical introduction, and a guide to sources. It explores Lewes as it was at the outbreak of war, providing a historical narrative of the impact the Great War had on the town up to the end of the war and the Treaty of Versailles, and beyond into the early 1920s, covering topics including the social changes wrought by the war.
