Sue Berry: Country Houses on the South Downs, Wednesday 26 October 2022, 5.30pm

Zoom Talk from Friends of The Keep Archives (FoTKA)

Dr Sue Berry: The story of the Country Houses on the Sussex Downs – from medieval to modern

Many country houses are older than they look today, owners simply altered them to suit their taste and needs. A substantial number of estates did not remain with the same owners for centuries, and we will explore why. We will also ask how a few families have managed to hold on to estates in Sussex for several centuries, even if to do so, land and houses outside the county were sold.

Dr Sue Berry has published on a wide range of topics ranging from country houses to seaside resorts, and aspects of the impact of tourism. Formerly a university Principal Lecturer, a Trustee of the National Trust, and a magistrate, Sue is currently working on an article about the millions invested in building and improving country houses in the Sussex Weald between 1840 and 1914. This was achieved mainly by new comers, on many houses we know well today.
