Lewes History Group talk on Lewes within living memory – Monday 13 November 2017, 7:00 for 7:30pm

Bob Cairns: Lewes Within Living Memory

Do you remember Cliffe High Street and School Hill with two-way traffic? And the wholesale clearance behind Cliffe for the building of the Phoenix Causeway? Or can you remember Malling Street before the Cuilfail Tunnel?

Whether you answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to these questions, Bob Cairns’ illustrated talk to the Lewes History Group on Monday 13 November 2017 will either bring back memories or help you see the town in a new light.

Using images from his collection of postcards and photographs back to the 1920s, Bob will look at some of the changes in Lewes within living memory. He says, “To justify my timeline I’m hoping for some 90-year olds to attend! And as usual, I will encourage audience participation and challenge people’s knowledge of old Lewes with dozens of previously unseen pictures.”

Talk on Suffragettes in Sussex – Thursday 2 November 2017

A Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre, Uckfield event

Frances Stenlake: Suffragettes in Sussex

Come and hear the story of the Votes for Women campaign here, law-abiding and non-violent as elsewhere in rural Sussex, and involving prominent local figures, aided by suffragists of national and international importance who lived in the area.

Speaker Frances Stenlake began researching women’s suffrage campaigning in Worthing in preparation for a talk to the Worthing Family History Society. She found the story of the Cuckfield and Central Sussex Womens’s Suffrage Society from the microfilmed Mid Sussex Times in Burgess Hill Library, so she knew that organised campaigning across inland Sussex was conducted by a network of NUWSS branches, and that WSPU activity was largely confined to coastal centres, notably Hastings and Brighton.
