The ruins of Lewes Priory will be lit by thousands of candles on the evening of Saturday 13 September. Bring a picnic and enjoy this magical free event. There will be drummers, a procession of singers and a hog roast.

A Friends of Anne of Cleves House event

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Lewes Racecourse on 14th September 1964.

John Turley grew up in a close-knit racing community and he will combine this experience with his keen interest in the history of racing to produce an illustrated talk focussing on the historic County Cup, which was raced for at Lewes in the 19th century.

The County Cup trophy is exhibited at Anne of Cleves House.

This course of 16 meetings over two terms will be tutored by Sussex Archaeological Society member Dr Geoff Doel. Dr Doel is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Kent, and Canterbury Christ Church University.

It will explore the history of Lewes as a microcosm of national economic, religious, political and social trends from Anglo-Saxon times to the Regency. Topics will include pre-Conquest Lewes, medieval Lewes churches, Lewes Castle and the Battle of Lewes, traditional customs and legends, markets and fairs, Tom Paine, bonfire, inns and taverns, non-conformity, anchorites and alms houses.

Schedule: From 1.00 to 3.00 p.m. on Mondays, starting on 29 September 2014

Venue: St Michael’s Hall, Lewes High Street

Fees: £160 for two terms, reduced to £150 for SAS members (includes tea/coffee)
