Lewis Orchard: The History and Conservation of No. 1 North Street, Lewes

Lewis Orchard has been carefully conserving the structure and interiors of this unique building for the past 12 years.

This house and bake-house was built for Stephen Steere in 1805. It is a unique design which combines cobbled and mathematically tiled frontages with a later shop front circa 1860. Unusually, much of the original building survived, distressed but unaltered, alongside a unique record of interior decoration which includes original mouldings, paints and wallpapers.

As conservation work nears completion, Lewis will talk about the history of the house, its occupants, and what conservation and research has revealed about them and their home.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.

There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.

Lewes Archaeological Group Event

New research results from geophysics expert David Staveley, who has worked extensively across Sussex and developed his own pioneering software for processing his survey results.

Visit the East Sussex Records Office in its new home at The Keep, Falmer, on Saturday 1 February.

The programme includes tours of the new building and conservation demonstrations as well as family activities that explore some of the fun and fascinating stories in the various collections.
