This will be the Ale and Hearty Project’s final event, where they will launch the ‘Ale Tales’ booklet: the result of twenty oral histories that relate a recent social history of brewing in and around Lewes.

There will also be family crafts workshop, a chance to view the exhibition, a film showing, a Q&A discussion, delicious food, a raffle, and of course some local ale.

Drop in afternoon: 12pm – 3:30 pm

As part of the Lewes Racecourse Carnival Day on Sunday 14 September 2014, the Lewes Racecourse 50th Anniversary Club is planning a vintage car show, and is looking for pre-1964 cars and bikes to join their parade.

The parade will be from North Street Lewes to the old Lewes Racecourse, where the commemoration events for the 50th Anniversary of the closure of the Racecourse will take place.

Dr Sam Carroll: Ale & Hearty – Brewing in Lewes over 200 Years

Oral historian, Dr Sam Carroll, will cover the new insights that the Ale & Hearty project has yielded on the social and agricultural history of brewing in Lewes, using examples of what has been collected over the project’s duration; from archives, published sources and oral history interviews.

The project focuses on the history of brewing in Lewes and its related industrial and agricultural links over 200 years. It focuses on the community of Lewes; working life in relation to breweries, agricultural workers and rural life and trades. It also links in with abstinence and religious culture locally at the time, as well as a clear relation between trades and society through social clubs.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.

There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.
