John Hollands: Lewes’ Railway Connections

Railway enthusiast John Hollands will talk about how Lewes became connected to our railway network, and other matters associated with its complicated history in the nineteenth century, including why Lewes has had three stations; the impact railways had on the town; some notable comings and goings; and what Mr Burwood Godlee of Leighside had to do with it all.

John’s father was a railway worker, and as a child, he spent much time watching train movements from his father’s allotment on what was once the Leighside Estate, now the Railway Land.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.

There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.

Truly local radio returns to Lewes on 24th October, and will feature a History Hour on Saturday 27 October, Saturday 2nd, and Sunday 3rd November, from 2 to 3pm.

The Lewes History Group’s Street Stories project was featured on Saturday 27 October.

On Saturday 2 November Debby Matthews & Rosie Boxer will be interviewing: Michael Chartier on the Battle’s context & importance; Edwina Livesey on the Heritage Lottery project; Tom Walker (designer) and Jackie Bennett (weaver) on the BoL Tapestry at the Barbican and the latest panel’s progress; Chris Whittick on the Battle’s route (or should that be routes…?); Jon Gunson about the formal celebrations and the Banners project, Phil Rose and students about the “Prepare for Battle @ 750” a project devised by young people for young people; and Andy McBean on the informal celebration plans in association with the Bonfire Societies.

Sunday 3 November will feature items on what archaeological finds tell us about life above ground in the Ouse Valley, life at the Priory and at its Cluny counterpart. Plus looking forward to 2014 – the WW1 commemorations in and around Lewes with details of a Sussex Past conference in April and a reprise of the Battle of Lewes celebration plans for May.
