Lewes History Group talk: The impact of the First World War on the Jewish community in Sussex – Monday 10 January 2022, 7:20 for 7:30pm start

A Zoom Webinar

Diana Wilkins: The impact of the First World War on the Jewish community in Sussex

To start 2022, Lewes History Group’s speaker, Dr Diana Wilkins shares research into local Jewish lives between 1914-1918, including military experiences, family histories and religious traditions.

The centenary of the First World War has stimulated a wealth of new research. One project which looked at the effect of the conflict on local communities was Shalom Sussex. This volunteer-led research focused on the experiences of the county’s long-established Jewish community.

During the First World War, local Jewish people enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment, provided nursing care or offered charitable support. Diana’s talk will tell the stories of some those involved, from soldiers who gave their lives on the battlefield, to entertainers such as the musical duo Terris and Romaine, to colourful figures like the diamond-millionaire, Barney Barnato.

She will also describe the more complex aspects of the war years, such as the difficulties faced by British families with German origins and the war-time protests of Siegfried Sassoon. Alongside this, Diana will highlight the Jewish history of some well-known places, including Brighton’s Palace pier, Nymans Gardens in Horsham and Highdown Gardens in Worthing.
