Music, film, and history: Tyburnia – at Westgate Chapel, Saturday 6 June 2015, 7pm

A collaboration between Dead Rat Orchestra and artist/filmmaker James Holcombe – TYBURNIA is an experimental 16mm documentary with live soundtrack which explores the history and legacy of London’s Tyburn Gallows – the city’s principal hanging spot for 600 years. The film charts an alternative history of the UK, illuminating the twists and turns of sovereign and political whimsy, church and state, and the birth of mercantile capitalism. TYBURNIA highlights parallels between our past and our present, raising questions about the nature of power.

Tyburnia has provided an opportunity to breath life back into some very peculiar and rare songs. The DRO have created a sound track that features songs that were composed by or for those condemned to ‘dance the Tyburn jig’, bringing a new understanding to the broadside ballads that have become a staple of folk music, but here presented in close association to their original context.

The shadow of the Tyburn Tree extended well beyond London, with assizes, gallows, and gibbets in many market and county towns. To explore this rich and melancholy history Tyburnia is being performed as close to the location of various regional gallows as possible.

Venue: Westgate Chapel, Lewes, 92a High Street, Lewes, BN7 1XH, 01273 311417
