November talk – Southover Parish, a changing suburb – by Sue Berry

Monday, 9 November 7.30 pm on Zoom

The south side of St John the Baptist in 1803 by Petrie

Southover developed on a ridge, which served as a route-way to the Priory and, using crossing posts over the Winterbourne, to Lewes.

By the 1500s, it was a busy suburb, the Wellesbourne attracting trades such as tanning which needed a water supply, and common suburban activities at the time such as smithing – a fire hazard against which a water supply was useful.

Sue will explore what the later Tudor and early Stuart suburb may have looked like – some of the buildings hidden behind later cladding date from this period – and then follow the story to the increasing gentrification of Southover by 1914 and why this happened.
