Introduction and abbreviations
This information was compiled during research into the history of South Street.
It is derived almost completely from printed sources. Early information is from Colin and Judy Brent’s ‘Lewes House Histories, part 3 Cliffe and Malling’ on the web. Later information is derived mainly from censuses, street directories and newspapers. The census was taken every 10 years from 1841, but the early ones do not necessarily have addresses. Where possible a guess has been made as to which house it refers. There is very little data after 1974, which is the year the street directories ceased publication.
Note that some house numbers do not exist and never have. For example, there were no houses between numbers 57 and 79 and between numbers 82 and 118.
