Roman Roads Research Association event

The Roman Roads Research Association is holding two conferences this year in Portsmouth and in York, to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Ivan D Margary, the celebrated Roman roads researcher and benefactor of archaeology, who was responsible amongst other things for saving the Fishbourne Roman Palace near Chichester.

The conferences will examine just how much our knowledge of the Roman road network in Britain has developed since Margary’s death in 1976, and look at how new technologies and approaches may move our understanding still further forward in the years to come.

We have brought together nationally and internationally renowned speakers for both events. Confirmed speakers for Portsmouth include Professor Mike Fulford (University of Reading), Dr. M. C. Bishop, John Poulter, Professor Anthony King (University of Winchester), David Millum & Rob Wallace (The Culver Project), Rob Entwistle, Dr. John Peterson (University of East Anglia), David Staveley, Bryn Gethin (Warwickshire Archaeology), Mike Haken (RRRA).

An Uckfield and District Preservation Society event at the Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre

Ann Kramer: Sussex Women

The historian and author Ann Kramer will talk about prominent women from Sussex throughout history.

From Victorians and suffragettes through to human rights and land girls. Her books include: Women Wartime Spies, Sussex Women. As well as writing, she tutors women’s studies and has appeared on TV and radio.

The newly refurbished Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre, Uckfield was opened on 23 April 2016. Built around 1436, this important Wealden Medieval timber-framed house now forms the local Heritage Centre. It has an events programme which can be seen on their website.

An event at The Keep, Falmer

Local historian Andrew Lusted will explore the beginnings of women’s team games and their formalisation in Victorian England. Perhaps surprisingly, this begins with the local game of stoolball and also features the earliest attempts of women to start playing cricket.

Andrew will highlight the role of the small village of Glynde in the development of both of these sports.
