170 years of the Sussex Archaeological Society

Join us on Saturday 18th June 2016 in Lewes, as we celebrate 170 years of the Sussex Archaeological Society with a day of tours and talks.

We have organised a number of “behind the scenes” tours at Lewes Castle, and a new exhibition on the history of the Society in the Barbican House Gallery.

For instance, you can climb to the top of the castle’s second motte, Brack Mount, normally closed to the public, with former castle custodian John Bleach (see below), or explore the cellar at Barbican House Museum and see where we store hundreds of artefacts not currently on display.

An exhibition by Artemis Arts to mark the closure of the Foundry Gallery, which had once been part of the Phoenix Iron Works.

The exhibition will feature photos, film, recordings and artefacts about the Phoenix Ironworks which were founded in 1832 by Mr Every.  They will be using material from their original Lewes Phoenix project which began in 2008. They are also hoping to collect more information during the course of the exhibition, and anyone who worked at the Phoenix or East Sussex Engineering is invited to come along and share their stories.

A talk by photographer Tom Reeves

Discover Lewes in days gone by documented by the Reeves photographers, including newly researched material from the Edward Reeves Archive.

Venue: Priory School, Mountfield Road, Lewes
