A Church and its Community

St John sub Castro Church and Lewes History Group have joined together to mount an exhibition entitled “A Church & its Community”.

The displays feature prints, photos and information on:

• St John sub Castro, past, present and future
• LHG’s Lewes Street Stories research on Sun Street, St John Street, Toronto Terrace, Church Row and Pelham Terrace
• The history of the Pells School
• Soldiers from the parish who are on Lewes’ WW1 & WW2 memorial
• Insight into how the Finns prisoners came to Lewes

The church will be open as part of the Heritage Open Days on 12 September 2015, plus the two Saturdays following (19 and 26 September), 10am – 5pm.

Refreshments will be available

As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days celebration, Lewes Priory Park will be lit by 3000 tea lights in jam jars, on Saturday September 12th 2015 between 6-9:30pm.  There will be drummers, choirs and food and drink tents. More details

The Priory Trust is putting out a call for jars:

“We will be collecting clean jars, without lids or labels, at the Folly in Lewes Priory Park on Saturday August 29th and September 5th between 10am and 2pm.
Jars can also be left at 19 Cluny Street, Lewes.”

Sun Street is in the conservation area of Lewes situated in the area known as the ‘New Town’ on the North side of the main High Street in the parish of St John sub Castro.

The Lewes History Group Sun Street team have been researching the history of Sun Street since 2013. They held a very successful exhibition in September 2014, and gave a talk on their findings so far to the Lewes History Group in December 2014.

The team have updated their web pages to include new research findings, and will be exhibiting their work, along with that of other Lewes History Group teams in the Pells area, at the 2015 Lewes Heritage Open Days at St John Sub Castro Church. We will supply more details on this event soon.
