Joanna Wilkins: William de Warenne, the Man Behind Lewes Castle
Joanna Wilkins, of the Sussex Archaeological Society, will talk about William de Warenne, his life from younger son with few prospects to William the Conqueror’s right-hand man; the changing world around him in the 11thC; and how he came to be England’s third richest man in the last 1000 years (according to The Times’ Millenium Rich List) owning five castles and land in 13 counties.
As usual all will be welcome, and we will be serving coffee and biscuits before the meeting.
There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.
Venue: The King’s Church building on Brooks Road, Lewes, BN7 2BY. (Between Tesco car park and Homebase)
See the Meetings page for a list of forthcoming monthly talks organised by the Lewes History Group.
