Tom Paine inspired the Radicals of the 1790s with his book Rights of Man. He was prosecuted and had to flee to France.

His friend and fellow internationalist Thomas Muir led the movement for popular democracy in Scotland. He, too, was prosecuted and transported to Botany Bay. Then he escaped…
