Rosalind Chislett: Living in History: investigating the history of your property

The ordinary historic houses of Sussex are perhaps the most underestimated part of our local heritage. They are an integral part of the fabric of our towns and countryside, most of them with an unknown history. However, the potential is there to trace who has lived in them and to discover the part that these people and their house have played in the development of their locality.

It is not just large country houses that have an interesting past: timber-framed cottages and Victorian terraces also have their story to tell. While not everyone will be able to claim that “Queen Elizabeth I stayed here“, there are any number of interesting facts you could find out about the history of your house.

There are a wide range of resources available to start researching the architecture and history of your house.

Rosalind’s company ‘House Historians’ investigates the history of houses in London and the South of England.

She has co-authored the text in a new book called Living In History. This is a different way of looking at the evolution of English house styles and architectural diversity of each period through the eyes and beautiful hand drawn portraits of Eli Ofir.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.

There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.

The Thomas Paine Society UK Summer Symposium 2016 entitled ‘Thomas Paine: Statehood’ will take place at their AGM in London on 11 June 2016.
