David Clark: Lewes Business Stories: WE Clark & Son, Jewellers

Back in 1919, Wilfred Ernest Clark purchased an existing jewellery showroom at 1 Cliffe High Street (that had been going since 1819) and laid the foundations of a passion that is now in the hands of the third and fourth generation, John and David Clark. David will tell the story behind his family’s business success over nearly 100 years, including the early days, the WWII years, its expansion into Eastbourne and the 2012 amalgamation of its two shops in Lewes into 224 High Street.

All are welcome from 7.00pm for free refreshments and updates on the Group’s activities. The talk will begin promptly at 7:30pm and will finish by 9.00pm.

There is an entry fee for these meetings, payable at the door, of £2 for members, and £3 for non-members.

John Manley: Three Iron Ages in Sussex? Weald, Downs and Coastal Plain

The landscapes of Sussex can easily be di­vided into three – the coastal plain, the Downs and the Weald. Each landscape offered par­ticular resources and advantages not found in the other two. Iron Age communities lived and worked in each of these landscapes in specific ways, giving a distinct quality to the surviving archaeological record in each area, and it is likely that the landscapes possessed different symbolic values for those living among them as well. This talk by John Manley will explore the three different Iron Ages of Sussex both from the practical and symbolic dimensions and suggest potential links between them.
